Jesus Christ and Him Crucified

Date: Jun. 24, 2015

Passage

1 Corinthians 2:1-5  (ESV)

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Key Verse: 2:2

For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

First, not with eloquence or wisdom. (1-2) Paul came to Greece as a learned man himself. But he didn't approach the pioneering of Corinth based on his knowledge or speaking ability. He wasn't competing in the realm of philosophy. In fact he resolved to depend completely on the testimony of God-the message of the cross of Christ.

Second, so that your faith might rest on God's power. (3-5) Why did Paul not rely on his superior knowledge and experience as a Bible teacher? He wanted to see a demonstration of the Spirit's power. Though it was a fearful experience for him, Paul wanted the people of Corinth to have faith that rests solely on the power of God-the power of Christ and him crucified.

Prayer: Lord, give me a thirst to know your power. Help me not to serve with my wisdom, but with the hope to know Jesus Christ and him crucified.

One Word: To know Jesus Christ and him crucified
