The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Date: Nov. 23, 2015

Passage

Matthew 25:1-13  (ESV)

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

First, the five wise virgins (1-5). Jesus, the Bridegroom, will surely come and bring his kingdom. How then should we live? In this parable, ten virgins went out to meet the bridegroom. They all took lamps full of oil, but five of them took extra oil, just in case he was delayed. The extra oil is persevering, committed faith--faith that doesn't give up when the night is long and the going gets tough.

Second, the Bridegroom comes (6-13). At midnight there was a joyful shout: "The Bridegroom is coming!" But the five foolish virgins were out of oil. They asked the wise ones to share, but they were refused. One must meet Jesus with his own faith--no one can borrow the faith of another. While the foolish virgins were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived, went in, and closed the door. They missed their chance to meet him and they missed the banquet.

Prayer: Lord, I love you. You are my true Husband and Friend and Savior. Help me to persevere in faith and in love with a prepared heart as I await your coming.

One Word: Prepare your faith for Jesus' coming
