Mark 1:9-13 (ESV)
Key Verse: 1:11
First, Jesus was baptized in the Jordan (9-11). Jesus began his ministry by being baptized by John the Baptist. Why would sinless Jesus need to be baptized? Jesus' baptism pleased his Father God (11). Jesus also knew it had to be done "to fulfill all righteousness" (Mat 3:15). As Jesus came up out of the water as he was being baptized, the voice of God said to him, "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." Jesus submitted to John's baptism because he knew his Father loved him and this act pleased Him. Sometimes we don't understand why God wants us to do something. It is enough to know it pleases Him.
Second, Jesus was tempted by Satan (12,13). As soon as God's voice said He was pleased with him, the Spirit sent Jesus out into the wilderness. The Spirit sent him to be tempted by Satan. Jesus bore Satan's temptation for 40 days. Jesus had to be tempted by Satan in order for him to be our perfect high priest, who understands our temptations and our needs. How did Jesus survive 40 days of Satan's temptation? His Father sent angels to attend him. God may send us into the wilderness, which may be vulnerable to temptation, but He will always send us aid to overcome.
Prayer: Lord, help us to live our lives to please you. Help us to overcome our temptations.
One Word: God was pleased with Jesus
