Passage

Luke 1:1-25  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Introduction to Luke

Key Verse: 1:13a

First, you may know with certainty (1-4). Luke, a physician and companion of Paul wrote this gospel. He carefully investigated all the details concerning Jesus' life in order to write it. Luke's purpose in writing was so that we may know the certainty of the things we believe in the gospel.

Second, you will go on before the LORD (5-17). Luke begins with an elderly, priestly couple with no child. Zechariah is chosen by lot to burn incense and pray in the temple on behalf of his people. While there, he sees an angel who comes to give him good news. Elizabeth is going to have a boy; his name will be John. This son will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah. He will help his people get ready for the Messiah.

Third, "be silent" training (18-25). After hearing the good news from the angel of God, Zechariah was doubtful. He asked, "How can this be?" Therefore, God gave him silent training to use his mouth to glorify God by speaking words of faith. God heard all their family prayers; now it was time to rejoice in God's favor and blessing.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for answering prayers. Help me overcome my unbelief and speak words of faith.

One Word: Rejoice and believe God hears
