The Lord Shields My Head

Date: Dec. 10, 2016

Passage

Psalm 140:1-13  (ESV)

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

  Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men;
    preserve me from violent men,
  who plan evil things in their heart
    and stir up wars continually.
  They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s,
    and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah
  Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked;
    preserve me from violent men,
    who have planned to trip up my feet.
  The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,
    and with cords they have spread a net;
    beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah
  I say to the LORD, You are my God;
    give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!
  O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
    you have covered my head in the day of battle.
  Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked;
    do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
  As for the head of those who surround me,
    let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
10   Let burning coals fall upon them!
    Let them be cast into fire,
    into miry pits, no more to rise!
11   Let not the slanderer be established in the land;
    let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
12   I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
    and will execute justice for the needy.
13   Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
    the upright shall dwell in your presence.

Key Verse: 140:7

  O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
    you have covered my head in the day of battle.

First, my strong Deliverer (1-8). David fought many battles both before and after he became king. Our battles are with the Prince of Darkness, for we are engaged in spiritual warfare. Satan makes war against my soul every day. But the Sovereign Lord is my strong Deliverer. He guides my feet, which are so prone to wander and to lead me into traps. He protects my head--my most vulnerable spot--on the day of battle.

Second, destroy your enemies, O Lord (9-13). David was attacked both physically and verbally. Satan uses evil rumors and slander to attack God's servants in our times as well. He is an expert in psychological warfare. What can we do? We cannot depend on ourselves, for we are weak. Our weapons are prayer and the word of God. He will surely defend his people and destroy his enemies, for the sake of his name.

Prayer: Lord, you are my guide and my strong Deliverer. Shield my head on the day of battle and cover the heads of your enemies with trouble.

One Word: The Lord will shield my head
