New Life in Christ

Date: Dec. 27, 2016

Passage

Colossians 3:1-11  (ESV)

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Key Verse: 3:1

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

First, set your heart on things above (1-4). The believer's present status is dead to sin and 'raised with Christ'. Our goal and destination was completely changed from hell to the kingdom of God. As a pilot sets his direction and the airplane goes to that destination, so we will go to the kingdom of God or to hell according to how we set our heart on things above on Christ or on earthly things. Our life is now hidden with Christ. But when Christ, who has suffered, died but raised, appears, then we also will appear with him in glory.

Second, put on the new self (5-11). Since we have new life with Christ, we must put to death whatever old life we used to walk with earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language from our lips and lie. Put to death means to count ourselves dead to sin. It also means not offering our body to sin but to God (Ro 6:13). Here there is no Gentile or Jew. Everybody must take off old self and put on Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, let me set on my heart on you, putting my old nature to death and putting on Jesus new life everyday.

One Word: Set your heart on Jesus above

Being a Part of God’s History

2 Chronicles 6:1-11

Key Verse: 6:10

Now the LORD has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and I have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
