Worthy is Jesus the Lamb

Date: Apr. 28, 2025

Passage

Revelation 5:1-14 (ESV)

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10   and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Key Verse: 5:12

saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

John saw God on his throne with a sealed scroll in his right hand. From the rest of Revelation, we know that opening the scroll would bring about all God promised, both judgment and God’s kingdom for his children. A mighty angel asked, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” In fact, it seemed no one was worthy to open the scroll. If no one could open the scroll, God’s salvation plan to restore his kingdom would not come to pass. Therefore, John wept and wept.

Yet there was one worthy—the Lamb who looked as if he had been slain and was standing at the center of the throne. The Lamb took the scroll and when he did so, the heavenly creatures and elders all fell down before him. They sang a song, proclaiming that the Lamb was worthy to take the scroll and open its seals.

The Lamb is Jesus. Jesus was slain and with his blood, purchased people from every language and nation. Jesus bought his people with his blood to serve God and reign on the earth. Jesus alone is worthy to open the scroll. Jesus is worthy to receive honor, glory, power, and praise forever!

Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus who was slain and by his blood purchased us. We praise and honor you. Help us to serve you today.

One Word: Jesus, who was slain for us, is worthy!

The Consequences of Deception

Genesis 27:30-46

Key Verse: 27:33

Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.”
