Mark 1:21-28 (ESV)
Key Verse: 1:22
First, Jesus' teaching has authority (21,22). After Jesus called his disciples, they went to the town of Capernaum. On a Sabbath day, Jesus went into a synagogue. He began to teach the people. As he taught, people were amazed, because he taught them as one who had authority. When we teach the Bible, we can teach like teachers of the law and be legalistic, or we can amaze people with the word of God. As Jesus had authority to teach the word of God, so God gives us authority so that we can teach as Jesus did. Are our Bible students amazed with God's word? They should be!
Second, Jesus drives out an impure spirit (23-28). One of those amazed at Jesus' teaching was a man with an impure spirit. We can even say the impure spirit itself was amazed with Jesus, for it recognized Jesus and knew Jesus could destroy it. So it called out, "I know who you are-the Holy One of God!" Jesus ordered the spirit to be quiet and come out of the man. It could do nothing but obey, and it left the man. All the people were amazed at Jesus' authority over impure spirits.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus' authority to teach and his authority over spirits. Help us to teach with authority.
One Word: Jesus is amazing!
