"that is Why I Have Come"

Date: Jan. 20, 2016

Passage

Mark 1:29-39  (ESV)

29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” 39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Key Verse: 1:38

And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”

First, Jesus heals many (29-34). Jesus, James, John, Simon and Andrew went to the home of Simon's mother-in-law. She was in bed, sick with a fever. Jesus healed her, and she began to wait on them. Late that evening, people from all over the village brought people to Jesus to be healed. And Jesus healed many and drove out many demons. Jesus didn't stop at the miraculous healing of Simon's mother-in-law. He labored very late into the night to heal all who came to him. Jesus did no mass healing, but healed each one personally.

Second, Jesus prayed (35-39). Jesus barely had time to sleep. He got up very early in the morning, and went to a solitary place to pray. His solitude didn't last long. Simon and the others found Jesus and said, "Everyone is looking for you!" Jesus told them, "Let us go somewhere else-to the nearby villages-so I can preach there also. That is why I have come" (38). Jesus preached the word of God to all the nearby towns and villages. Jesus came to do his Father's will. His Father's will was to preach the gospel. And so he preached to all around him.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus, who healed, prayed and preached the word of God to serve sinners like me.

One Word: That is why Jesus came

Key Verse: 15:4

Who will not fear, O Lord,
    and glorify your name?
  For you alone are holy.
    All nations will come
